Colorado 2013

Bear with me as I catch up on blogging.  Throughout the next few blog post you'll see that we've had a lot going on the past few months.  As if having a baby wasn't enough, we added several visitors, vacations, holidays and a deployment in the mix.

The Army graciously provided us with two weeks of block leave around Thanksgiving this year.  We opted to spend one of those weeks in Colorado, since this would be our last vacation as a family of three, and before Shane deployed.  It was a great trip! The first few days we spent in Colorado Springs visiting the Olympic Training Facilities, Focus on the Family, Air Force Academy, Garden of the gods, and the two males went to a World War II aviation museum together (while I shopped!). Then we made our way through a snowstorm to Vail, Colorado to stay with and visit family, and for Shane to ski a few days.

The Olympic Training Center had a really interesting tour. We watched Olympians train in the weight room, swim in the Olympic size pool, and got an up close look at several of their gymnasiums. It was a neat facility and history of the olympics.

Matthew, like his parents, enjoyed several nights at a Embassy Suites during our vacation.  We love their huge cooked-to-order breakfast, 2 bedroom suites, and happy hour reception in the evenings. Staying in Colorado Springs and Denver marked Matthew's 6th & 7th cities to stay at Embassy Suites; he thinks he is a pro at hotel living.
We all enjoyed seeing and playing in Whit's End at Focus on the Family! Shane and I also enjoyed watching videos of their history, and visiting the large gift shop, all while reminiscing about listening to Adventures in Odyssey when we were growing up.

Although it was freezing and windy we visited the the Air Force Academy.  We mostly wanted to see their famous and beautiful cadet chapel, however, we lucked out and were there during the cadets lunch formation.  Shane watched intently talking about how he loved being on "this" side of things - post graduation. He said he endured plenty of the freezing lunch formations during his four years at West Point.  It was interesting nonetheless, and brought back memories of our dating throughout his military academy experience, and when my brother attended the Air Force Academy many years ago.

The next stop was Garden of the gods. We decided to take a slow driving tour of the Gardens instead of taking walking trails around during that cool November day. The red rocks, and views of pikes peak were beautiful.

While Shane spent two days skiing Vail Mountain, Matthew and I did the walking tour of both Vail Village and Beaver Creek with my cousin Andrea and her children.  The weather was cold, but the buildings and scenery were gorgeous. Although toting around a 1 year old in his ski jacket, while being 8 months pregnant in the cold/snow proved to be a challenging task; thank goodness for my wonderful husband and our great family who helped a tremendous amount! We enjoyed every minute of our vacation to Colorado and will cherish those fun memories while we are apart.

The Boys

This post isn't for any specific event, but rather a special post for Shane and the boys.  Prior to Shane leaving he had quite a bit of time off due to Christmas, paternity leave, and the fact that most of his battalion was gone.  He was the best dad and husband during this time, spending almost all day every day with our little family, making memories.  Matthew and Shane specifically spent countless hours together- laughing, being thrown in the air, cooking, chasing, reading, doing laundry, and just playing. The (little) boys and I are so thankful for such a wonderful, loving, helpful, fun and Godly man. We miss you Shane!

This is the day...

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say rejoice. -Philippians 4:4

I want to be mad, I want to tell you everything I (strongly) dislike about the Army.  However, somehow I feel like that isn't what the Lord wants me to convey this deployment.  The past few weeks have been nothing short of amazing, yet some of the most dreadful days of my life as well.  There are no real words or ways to tell you how truly awful it is to have your husband deploy.  I thought I had sympathy for my friends whose husbands have deployed in the past, but there is really no way to understand the devastation, hurt and loneliness unless you have experienced it yourself (which I don't recommend).  I've shed more tears than I thought my body was capable of producing, worried and pondered things no wife or mom should ever have to, watched my son wave goodbye to his best bud and daddy without a clue that he won't see him again for a very long time, and watched my husband say goodbye to our sweet newborn who he will barely recognize when he gets home; however, I have also had some of the sweetest and heartfelt hugs and kisses that I never want to forget, cherished every single moment our family has spent together, and am more thankful than ever for my amazing handsome and Godly husband and father of our two boys.  Therefore, I will rejoice in The Lord as He has commanded me.  His plan and purpose for this deployment is far greater than I can imagine, so I will put my trust in Him, for my God is faithful.  Yes, even today (one of my worst) is the day The Lord has made, so I will rejoice.

Don't be fooled. I am no superwoman. I am not resilient. This attitude does not come easy.  It took me falling to the lowest of lows, curled up on the floor of our bedroom sobbing, pleading to God for anything.  I am not perfect, but God is. I knew I couldn't continue our last few days as a family together sobbing uncontrollably at everything. There had to be a better solution.  I wanted to be joyful but truly didn't know how I could, knowing the impending doom.  My sweet husband told me start small and force myself to say aloud the things I was thankful for.  I turned on Christian music anytime I felt depressed.  Between diaper changes and Cheerios I stood in the kitchen searching my bible for every verse where God commands us to rejoice and be thankful.  When my thoughts started spiraling downward I prayed to be overcome with patience, strength, joy and contentment.  For I know this is the will of God.

The joy of the Lord is your strength.  -Nehemiah 8:10

Lord,
I need you now more than ever before. You are my rock and the stronghold of my life. Give me patience and understanding beyond belief.  Let my heart be thankful and my attitude joyful. Teach me to be content in every situation.  I praise you Lord for you are my everything.
Amen

A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. - Proverbs 17:22

I am thankful for the great men and women in the Army who serve our country selflessly.
I am thankful for the option to live on post, with great neighbors.
I am thankful for the never ending adventures the army provides.
I am thankful for the opportunity to travel places we otherwise wouldn't because of the army.
I am thankful for amazing friends we've met because of the army.
I am thankful Shane has a stable job.
I am thankful for the 4 day weekends and block leave that the army provides.
I am thankful for 100% coverage of all our healthcare needs.
I am thankful for the forced closeness the Army has brought our family.
Yes, I will even be thankful for the Army.

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances for this is the will of God. -1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Family Pictures 2013

We had wonderful family pictures taken this year before Shane deploys. I originally wanted them to be Matthew's 1 year pictures combine with family pictures and pretty fall foliage, but with Shane's busy training schedule and the weather we didn't end up taking them until November.  I am pleasantly surprised with how they turned out considering there were very high winds (just a true reminder that we do live in Kansas), it was quite chilly, and Matthew only wanted daddy to hold him.
